Control scheme of small-sized 300W BLDC motor based on ST products

    On June 14, 2023, WPG Holdings, a leading international semiconductor component distributor dedicated to the Asia-Pacific market, announced that its subsidiary Youshang has launched a small-sized 300W BLDC motor control solution based on the STM32G431 chip from stmicroelectronics (ST).

    With the continuous improvement of people's awareness of energy conservation and environmental protection, BLDC motors, as an efficient, environmentally friendly and intelligent drive technology, are gradually becoming the mainstream choice for various electric tools. Under this trend, Dalian Dayoushang has launched a small-sized 300W BLDC motor control solution based on the ST STM32G431 chip. This solution helps improve the energy efficiency of electric equipment, thereby achieving the goal of energy conservation and emission reduction.
    This scheme achieves the control of FOC by writing the PMSM control algorithm using STM32G431 and adopting three Hall-effect sensor signals as motor position feedback, thereby enabling the motor to precisely output the current in the correct phase and provide a smaller driving current.
    The STM32G431 is a general-purpose MCU based on the Arm® Cortex®-M4 core and features an integrated analog-to-digital converter, enabling current feedback and analog command input. Not only that, the product is also equipped with a counter implemented based on the Hall-effect sensor, which can be used to detect the magnetic pole Angle position and shaft speed of the motor. Moreover, the pulse width modulation (PWM) function equipped on the device can be used for the control of frequency converters. With these functions, this solution will reduce the hardware circuit, lower the cost and improve the performance of the motor at the same time.

    After testing, the efficiency of the driver in this scheme can reach 93% @300W (drive output), and the efficiency of the motor can reach 80%@250W (motor output). Moreover, the small volume design of the scheme also enables it to be applicable to various miniaturized products.

Core technological advantages:
    • The STM32G431 MCU is equipped with an analog-to-digital converter and can be used as the input for current feedback and analog rotational speed commands.
    • The counter based on the Hall-effect sensor can be used for the detection of the magnetic pole Angle position and shaft speed of the motor.

    • The Pulse width modulation (PWM) function, as a control of the frequency converter, can reduce the hardware circuit, lower the cost and improve the performance.

    • drive efficiency: 93%@300W (drive output);
    • motor efficiency: 80%@250W (motor output)
    • Rated current: 1.2A rms
    • Acceleration/deceleration time: <1.5sec (from rest to 1000 RPM@no -load);
    • Maximum driving current: 200% of the rated current can last for 5 seconds.
    • Rotational speed control range: 100-4000 RPM;
    • Speed regulation rate: <±1.5% (rated speed)
    • Software setting function: Output torque limit (preset 200% rated current);

    Rotational speed control and torque limitation
    Forward and reverse rotation control
    Simple acceleration and deceleration control
    Application: Mobile control of the machine tool platform.
