On November 7, 2025, Tessondelo Hamm, Belgium - Global microelectronics engineering company Melexis announced the launch of the fourth-generation automotive LIN motor driver MLX81350, which can provide up to 5W (0.5A) of power to motors. This driver is specially designed for the air conditioning dampers and automatic ventilation systems of electric vehicles (EVs), offering high cost performance. It not only enables the motor to operate quietly and efficiently but also simplifies the system integration process and ensures stable and reliable performance.



With the continuous development of electric vehicle technology, the importance of precisely controlling the airflow and temperature inside the vehicle is becoming increasingly prominent. Good control not only helps enhance passenger comfort but also effectively optimizes energy utilization efficiency, thereby providing support for advanced thermal management systems. For this reason, modern vehicles are usually equipped with a greater number of air conditioning damper motors and electronic vents. However, engineers faced multiple challenges during this design process: ensuring the reliable operation and silent operation of the motor, achieving seamless integration, and keeping the system cost within a reasonable range.
MLX81350 has successfully addressed the above-mentioned challenges with its balanced combination of performance, system integration and cost-effectiveness. As the fourth-generation 0.5A intelligent LIN motor driver based on high-voltage SOI (Silicon on Insulator) technology, this IC features flash programmability, high reliability and high functional density, while reducing the complexity of the bill of materials (BoM). By integrating analog and digital circuits, MLX81350 achieves a true single-chip solution, fully complying with the LIN slave node requirements defined in the industry standard LIN 2.x/SAE J2602 and ISO 17987-4 specifications.
The core advantage of MLX81350 lies in its optimized software architecture. Compared with the previous generation of products, it has further enhanced performance and efficiency. The key is the improvement of the locked-rotor detection function and the addition of sensorless closed-loop magnetic field directional control (FOC) function. These improvements make the motor run more smoothly, consume less current and generate less noise, thus better meeting the demands of various automotive HVAC and thermal management applications.
The MLX81350 maintains pin-to-pin compatibility with its predecessor, enabling engineers to easily migrate to existing designs with minimal modifications. Its LIN interface enables seamless communication within the vehicle network, and the built-in protection and diagnostic functions - including overcurrent, overvoltage and temperature shutdown protection - ensure the safe and reliable operation of the product in harsh automotive environments. In addition, this chip also offers a rich array of peripherals, supporting advanced motor control and system integration, specifically including: Configurable RC clock (24-40 MHZ), 4 general-purpose I/O (with both digital and analog functions), 1 high-voltage input, UART, SPI and I2C master-slave interfaces, 5× 16-bit motor PWM timer, 2× 16-bit general-purpose timer, and a 13-bit ADC with multiple channels (conversion time less than 1.2 microseconds).
This IC is developed in accordance with the ASIL B (ISO 26262) standard and supports flexible wake-up through the LIN bus, external pins or internal wake-up timers. It features a low standby current consumption (typically 25 microamperes, with a maximum of 50 microamperes), making it suitable for energy-saving operation scenarios. It integrates an internal voltage regulator, allowing direct power supply from a 12-volt battery and supporting an operating voltage range of 5.5V to 28V. Combining a robust protection mechanism, high integration and advanced motor control capabilities, the MLX81350 offers an economical, efficient and high-performance solution for modern air conditioning dampers and electronic vents in electric vehicles.
