Shanghai, China, September 11, 2025 - AMS Osram (SIX: AMS), a global leader in intelligent sensing and transmitter solutions, today announced the release of its latest direct time-of-flight (dToF) sensor, TMF8829, at the 26th China International Optoelectronic Exhibition (CIOE 2025). This product significantly enhances the resolution of the Direct time-of-flight (dToF) sensor from the industry-common 8×8 zones to 48×32 zones, enabling precise detection of subtle spatial differences and distinction between objects with small distances or similar shapes. It can be widely applied in various scenarios such as coffee machine ranging, drone distance measurement, and package sorting for logistics robots.

The drone model integrated with the AMS Osram TMF8829 sensor can accurately detect subtle spatial differences and distinguish objects with small spacing or similar shapes
Thanks to its extremely high resolution, in practical applications, the Ams Osram Direct Time-of-flight (dToF) sensor TMF8829 can accurately determine the items placed under the coffee machine - espresso cups or travel cups, ensuring precise liquid dispensing each time. This precision is crucial in a variety of application scenarios. For instance, logistics robots can use it to distinguish nearly identical packages, and the camera system in dynamic videos can continuously and accurately track moving targets.
David Smith, the ToF product marketing manager of AMS Osram, said: "The AMS Osram Direct Time-of-flight (dToF) sensor TMF8829 can achieve precise 3D detection and recognition in multiple scenarios without a camera, and maintain stable performance under various target objects, distances and environmental conditions."

Set a new benchmark for dToF technology
The AMS Osram Direct Time-of-flight (dToF) sensor TMF8829 employs dToF technology to emit light pulses in the invisible infrared band. The light pulse is reflected back to the sensor by objects within the field of view. The system determines the distance by calculating the round-trip time of the light pulse. This principle is similar to judging distance by echo delay: the longer the delay, the farther the object is. The multi-zone sensor collects reflected light from multiple perspectives (zones), builds a network of reflection points, and thereby generates a fine 3D depth map.

The TMF8829 Direct Time-of-flight (dToF) sensor significantly enhances resolution, increasing from the industry-common 8×8 zones to 48×32 zones (Image: AMS Osram)
The TMF8829 divides the field of view into up to 1,536 zones, marking a significant breakthrough compared to the standard 8×8 sensor (64 zones). Higher resolution can capture more minute spatial details, such as enabling intelligent lighting systems to perform personnel counting and occupation monitoring, object recognition and anti-collision in robot applications, and intelligent crowd detection in building automation. Detailed and in-depth data provides underlying support for machine learning models, helping the system analyze complex environments and achieve intelligent interaction with the surrounding environment.
The TMF8829 measures only 5.7mm×2.9mm×1.5mm, thinner than a 1-cent coin and more compact than conventional low-resolution sensors. Its high-resolution feature makes it particularly suitable for space-constrained devices. As it can operate without a camera, this sensor can be applied in scenarios where privacy protection is highly demanded. When working in conjunction with cameras, a hybrid vision system such as RGB deep fusion can be built to integrate depth and color data for AR applications such as virtual object positioning.
As a Class 1 eye safety device, the TMF8829 adopts dual vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) light sources, supporting a maximum ranging of 11 meters, with an accuracy of 0.25mm and sufficient sensitivity to capture minute movements such as finger sliding. With a 48×32 zone configuration, the sensor covers an 80° field of view, providing panoramic depth information comparable to that of a wide-angle lens. The processing module effectively reduces latency and simplifies integration. This sensor precisely locates distance measurement points by constructing a characteristic spectrum of light pulse reflection (rather than relying on a single signal), and can maintain stable performance even if the cover glass is stained. The complete histogram output function helps AI systems extract hidden patterns and additional information from the original signal.
Ams Osram leads the forefront of technological development with its commitment to continuous innovation. It has a powerful patent portfolio of over 1,000 patents and other intellectual property rights in the fields of VCSEL and 3D sensing technology, fully demonstrating its technological leadership.
