Shorter charging times and longer driving ranges are crucial for the development and popularization of electric vehicles, and both require more efficient operation of the battery system. The Battery Management System (BMS) achieves efficient operation of the system by monitoring the charging status of the battery, and at the same time, it monitors the insulation condition between the battery and the vehicle body to ensure the safe use of high-voltage batteries. The BMS that needs to handle high voltages is adopting electrical isolation optical relays.
The energy storage system (ESS) also adopts a configuration similar to that of the BMS, ensuring the efficient operation of renewable energy. Since energy storage systems also handle high voltages like electric vehicles, they are also one of the important application markets for electrical isolation optical relays.
Although 400V battery systems are currently the mainstream for electric vehicles, as the demand for longer driving ranges and faster charging speeds continues to grow, electric vehicles will accelerate their transition to 800V battery systems. The optical relays used in these battery systems must have a withstand voltage of approximately twice the system voltage. Therefore, for an 800V battery system, the withstand voltage value needs to be above 1600V. Toshiba has launched a new type of optical relay, which adopts its latest high-voltage MOSFET and has an output withstand voltage of 1800V (minimum value), making it suitable for 800V battery systems.
The 10-pin SO16L-T package of this optical relay uses resin with a relative tracking index (CTI) [2] of over 600, which belongs to Class I[3] materials in the IEC 60664-1[4] international standard. Moreover, its pin configuration ensures that the creepage distance on the optical receiver side is over 7.5mm [5] (Figure 1). These features all comply with the IEC 60664-1 standard and can provide a working voltage of 1500V.
