Shanghai, China, July 17, 2025 - Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (" Toshiba ") today announced the launch of a vehicle-mounted optical relay [1] "TLX9165T", which features a 10-pin SO16L-T package and supports high-voltage vehicle-mounted batteries with an output withstand voltage of 1800V (minimum). This product is now available for bulk shipment.

Shorter charging times and longer driving ranges are crucial for the development and popularization of electric vehicles, and both require more efficient operation of the battery system. The Battery Management System (BMS) achieves efficient operation of the system by monitoring the charging status of the battery, and at the same time, it monitors the insulation condition between the battery and the vehicle body to ensure the safe use of high-voltage batteries. The BMS that needs to handle high voltages is adopting electrical isolation optical relays.
The energy storage system (ESS) also adopts a configuration similar to that of the BMS, ensuring the efficient operation of renewable energy. Since energy storage systems also handle high voltages like electric vehicles, they are also one of the important application markets for electrical isolation optical relays.
Although 400V battery systems are currently the mainstream for electric vehicles, as the demand for longer driving ranges and faster charging speeds continues to grow, electric vehicles will accelerate their transition to 800V battery systems. The optical relays used in these battery systems must have a withstand voltage of approximately twice the system voltage. Therefore, for an 800V battery system, the withstand voltage value needs to be above 1600V. Toshiba has launched a new type of optical relay, which adopts its latest high-voltage MOSFET and has an output withstand voltage of 1800V (minimum value), making it suitable for 800V battery systems.
The 10-pin SO16L-T package of this optical relay uses resin with a relative tracking index (CTI) [2] of over 600, which belongs to Class I[3] materials in the IEC 60664-1[4] international standard. Moreover, its pin configuration ensures that the creepage distance on the optical receiver side is over 7.5mm [5] (Figure 1). These features all comply with the IEC 60664-1 standard and can provide a working voltage of 1500V.

Figure 1: Pin configuration of SO16L-T package at pin 10.
The pin pitch and pin configuration are the same as those of the SO16L-T package [6], allowing for a universal PCB pattern design.
In the future, Toshiba will continue to expand its optical relay products suitable for battery systems in automotive applications and energy storage systems of industrial equipment, contributing to the safe operation of the equipment.

Main specifications

Note
[1] Optical relay: The primary side (control) and the secondary side (switch) are electrically isolated. Switches directly connected to AC lines and those between devices with different grounding potentials can be controlled by insulating layers.
[2] Relative Tracking Index (CTI) : IEC 60112[7] defines CTI as the maximum voltage that may be reached before a drop of ammonium chloride solution on the surface of an insulating material causes tracking under given test conditions.
[3] Class I materials: A classification of forming materials in IEC 60664-1[4], materials with a relative tracking index (CTI) [2] of 600 or above.
[4] IEC 60664-1: This standard specifies the principles, requirements and test methods for insulation fits in systems with an AC voltage up to 1000V or a DC voltage up to 1500V.
[5] Creepage distance of over 7.5mm: Working voltage of 1500V, Class I material, pollution level 2 (Pollution degree of the working environment where electrical equipment is used: contaminants are completely non-conductive, but may become conductive due to condensation.) The required creepage distance.
[6] SO16L-T: The package adopted by Toshiba TLX9160T and TLX9152M.
[7] IEC 60112: An international standard that specifies the test method for measuring the relative tracking index (CTI) of insulating materials. This standard is used to evaluate the electrical breakdown (tracking) characteristics of the surface of solid insulating materials.
