Advances in technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and edge computing are driving innovation and upgrading across industries, and this process is accompanied by a dramatic increase in the demand for computing resources, raising new challenges in energy consumption and environmental impact. For example, in the field of data centers, servers, storage devices, and network equipment consume a lot of power when performing AI training and inference tasks. For example, in the field of intelligent terminals, with the deployment and application of large models of AI mobile phones, AI PCS and other devices, the energy consumption of these devices has also risen.
Taking data centers as an example, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), as the global demand for Internet services and AI continues to increase, the power consumption of the global data centers that support the operation of these services is rising year by year and is expected to double in the next four years. In fact, in a typical server rack, compute chips alone can consume more than 50% of the power budget. The huge energy consumption required to run complex AI loads has become a major challenge for data centers. In this context, the exploration of solutions to reduce AI power demand is crucial for the sustainable development of society as a whole.

As the world's leading computing platform company, with its energy efficiency DNA embedded in it, Arm, through innovative technologies and extensive collaboration with its ecosystem, has shown how to achieve energy efficiency technology innovation while delivering on its sustainability and social impact commitments. In the newly released "Arm 2024 Business for Sustainability Report", Arm has demonstrated its outstanding performance in improving energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting social well-being with strong data and cases.

Arm Computing Platform: The best combination of performance and power efficiency
In the face of increasing global demand for data computing and increasingly complex workloads, Arm's solutions prioritize reducing energy consumption while delivering market-leading performance. As the world's most extensive and efficient computing platform, Arm technology, represented by the Armv9 architecture, dramatically improves energy efficiency through innovative design, thus finding a valuable balance between technological progress and environmental responsibility.
Taking the significant reductions achieved by the ARM-based AWS Graviton3 as an example, in Arm's collaboration with Amazon Cloud Technologies (AWS), the Armv9 architecture excelled in handling complex AI workloads, especially in data-intensive tasks that significantly reduced power consumption. Compared to non-Graviton processors, the Graviton3 achieved a 68% reduction in carbon intensity when running ARM-specific workloads. This not only improves the energy efficiency of the data center, but also shows how technology can lead the green transformation in cloud computing and large-scale data processing.
Taking the Yitian 710 as an example, according to the data disclosed at the Alibaba Cloud 2022 Cloud Conference, the Yitian 710 can reduce the power consumption per vCPU by 6 times compared with x86 when the CPU load is 30%, and the power consumption of the whole machine is reduced by more than 60%. Carbon emissions are also proportionally lower. The annual power consumption of the national IDC is about more than 200 billion degrees, equivalent to the power generation of two Three Gorges dam, and the replacement of the case of relying on the sky can save the power of the entire Three Gorges.
In addition, the Armv9 architecture is unique in its extremely high scalability, enabling it to be used in a wide range of computing scenarios, from smart terminal devices to large data centers. This architecture not only meets the current technical needs, but also provides the foundation for the larger scale computing tasks of the future, opening up a new path for green computing.

From small sensors running workloads on edge devices to large servers for training complex workloads on large language models (LLMS), Arm cpus are fundamentally driving the AI revolution and are at the heart of an AI ecosystem that will grow in the coming decades. By striking the right balance between performance and energy efficiency, Arm is setting the standard for greener and more efficient technology for the entire industry, helping to achieve sustainable energy use worldwide.
