What is a Hall sensor?
Date:December 4, 2025    Views:16

A Hall sensor is a type of sensor that operates based on the Hall effect and is used to measure the intensity of a magnetic field. The Hall effect refers to the phenomenon where, when current passes through a conductor or semiconductor material, a potential difference (Hall voltage) is generated on both sides of the conductor under the influence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of the current. Hall sensors utilize this effect to sense the presence and intensity of magnetic fields.

Basic working principle
When current flows through a conductor: A part of a Hall sensor is a conductive material (such as a semiconductor) sheet. When current flows through this material sheet, a magnetic field induction is generated within the material.
Magnetic field influence: When an external magnetic field acts on the material sheet perpendicularly to the current direction, it will cause the carriers (electrons or holes) to shift within the material, forming a Hall voltage.
Voltage measurement: The magnitude of the Hall voltage is directly proportional to the intensity of the external magnetic field. By measuring this voltage, the intensity of the magnetic field can be calculated.

Main types
Linear Hall sensor: It is used to measure the intensity of a magnetic field and can output a voltage signal that has a linear relationship with the magnetic field intensity.
Switch-type Hall sensor: It is used to detect the presence of a magnetic field and output a switch signal (high/low), and is often used for position detection and speed measurement.

Main applications
Position and speed detection: Used for Angle and speed measurement of motors, wheel hubs, etc.
Current measurement: Used for current sensors, it indirectly measures current by detecting the magnetic field.
Safety and anti-theft system: Magnetic switch detection for doors and Windows.
Electronic pedometer: It is used in sports equipment to detect steps or the direction of movement.

Advantages
Non-contact measurement: There is no physical contact with the object being measured, reducing wear and interference.
High precision and stability: It can provide high-precision and stable magnetic field measurement.
Durability: It has good durability in harsh environments.

Disadvantage
Sensitivity: Hall sensors are highly sensitive to changes in magnetic fields, and thus may have certain requirements for the ambient magnetic field.
Power consumption: Some Hall sensors may consume a considerable amount of electrical energy, especially in applications that require high sensitivity.
