New solutions bring superior efficiency and safety features to power tools, portable vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, two-wheelers and more
Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global provider of semiconductor solutions, today announced the availability of the RAA489118 booster battery charger and RAA489400 Type-C™ port controller. The two new ics are combined to create a superior Extended Power Range (EPR) USB Power transfer (PD) solution.
The RAA489118 can be used either as a battery charger supporting 2 to 7 cells in series, or as a voltage regulator supporting 30V input and 30V output. It uses Renesas' patented R3™ (Robust Ripple Regulator) technology, combining the best features of fixed frequency and hysteresis pulse width modulation (PWM) technology. R3 modulation technology extends battery life by enabling silent noise operation, fast dynamic response, and best-in-class light load efficiency.
The RAA489118 contains the SMBus (System Management Bus) interface, which is widely used in power tools, household appliances and light industrial products. The SMBus interface, combined with the lift and bidirectional characteristics, enables the RAA489118 to work seamlessly with the RAA489400, as well as other components in the USB-C PD embodiment. Its input and output voltage levels are also matched with the mainstream solar power supply voltage level, which is an ideal choice for solar portable power plant applications.
The RAA489400 port controller supports USB-PD VBUS power up to 48V/5A with integrated PHY, Sink and Source power path gate drivers with external NFET, short circuit protection, VBUS discharge, a VCONN MUX, and dead battery support.
